Option 1: Donate or Pass It On
The City of Calgary's mattress disposal page suggests giving usable mattresses to family or friends, posting them online, or donating to charities such as Women in Need Thrift Stores and the Calgary Drop-In Centre. It also says to contact the charity first to confirm what it accepts.
In practice, most charities are strict about mattresses for hygiene reasons. Expect them to accept only clean, undamaged mattresses, and to turn away anything stained or sagging.
Cost
Free, apart from your time and transport.
Option 2: Recycle It
The City points residents to two recycling routes. When you buy a new mattress, ask the retailer whether it runs a recycling or take-back program. Otherwise, a local mattress recycler such as Re-Matt can take it, and the City notes that fees may apply.

Cost
A per-item recycling fee, plus getting the mattress there yourself. Check current rates directly with the recycler.
Option 3: Take It to a City Eco Centre
Unusable mattresses and box springs can go to a City Eco Centre, and the City is clear that charges apply. Rates change, so confirm the current fee on the City's website before you go.
This route is cheapest when you already own a truck and the mattress is on the ground floor. It gets harder fast with a king-size set, a basement bedroom, or more than one bed.
Cost
The Eco Centre fee, plus fuel, a vehicle that fits, and a second person to help lift.
Option 4: Book a Mattress Pickup
The last option is to have a crew collect it from the room it is in. With mattress and box spring removal in Calgary from Happy Panda Junk Removal, you tell us the sizes and which floor they are on, and we carry them out. Clean, dry mattresses are sent for recycling where possible, rather than straight to landfill.
What drives the price of a pickup
- How many pieces. A mattress and box spring count as two items.
- Size. A king set takes more room in the truck than a twin.
- Access. A basement or third-floor bedroom adds carrying time.
- The rest of the load. Adding a bed frame, a dresser or an old couch to the same visit costs far less than booking it separately.
Every job is quoted free, in writing, before anything is moved. Our junk removal cost guide explains how volume pricing works in more detail.
When a Mattress Needs to Leave Quickly
Some mattresses should not wait for the weekend.
Suspected bed bugs
A mattress with bed bugs should not be donated, sold or dragged through the house uncovered. Seal it in a heavy mattress bag in the room where it sits, then have it removed directly. Our crews bag anything suspect before it moves through the house.

Water damage
A mattress soaked by a leak or a basement flood can grow mould within days. It cannot be recycled or donated, and it should leave the house quickly.
Rental turnovers
Tenants leave beds behind constantly, and a suite cannot be shown with an old mattress in it. Same-day pickup is available, which helps when the next viewing is tomorrow.
