The Six Things That Decide the Cost
1. Size
Size sets how much debris there is and how long the teardown takes. A small garden shed fits in part of one truck load. A large or double shed can fill a truck on its own. As a rough guide to time, a small metal or plastic shed takes one to two hours, a standard 10 by 12 wood shed two to four hours, and a large one about half a day.
2. Material
Metal and plastic sheds come apart quickly and the metal panels can go for recycling. Wood sheds take longer, because the roof, walls and floor have to be cut or pried apart in order. Shingled roofs add weight, and older sheds sometimes have a plywood or particleboard floor that comes out as a separate layer.
3. What Is Still Inside
This is the factor that surprises people most. A shed full of old tools, plastic storage bins, broken lawn furniture and a dead lawnmower adds a load of its own before the structure is touched. Emptying it yourself first lowers the price, and anything still usable can go to donation rather than the landfill.

4. The Foundation
What the shed sits on matters as much as the shed itself:
- Skids or blocks: lift and haul, no extra cost worth noting.
- Wood floor frame: comes out with the structure.
- Concrete pad: breaking and hauling the slab is a separate job, priced by weight and usually adding half a day to a full day.
If you plan to put a new shed on the same spot, a sound pad can often stay. Ask for the pad to be quoted separately so you can decide.
5. Access
A shed beside a back lane can be loaded straight into the truck. One in the far corner of a fenced yard, reached through a narrow side gate, has to be carried out piece by piece. Steep yards, mature trees and tight spaces between the shed and the fence all slow the job.
6. Condition and Location
A rotten or half-collapsed shed needs more careful handling than a sound one, because it cannot be taken apart panel by panel. Location matters too. Yards in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and other towns around Calgary may carry a travel charge, which a fair quote states up front.

How to Lower Your Shed Removal Quote
- Empty it first, or at least pull out anything you want to keep, sell or donate.
- Send clear photos of the outside, the inside and the base, plus rough dimensions.
- Decide about the pad before booking, so the quote covers only what you need.
- Bundle other items. An old deck, a pile of yard waste or a garage full of clutter costs far less added to the same visit than booked separately. Our junk removal cost guide explains how volume pricing works.
- Book before the ground freezes. Late fall is a good time. Once snow is down, sheds are harder to reach and pads are harder to break.
Do You Need a Permit?
Removing an old shed is not what triggers a permit; building the next one can. The City of Calgary's garage and shed permit page says a shed needs a building permit if it is larger than 10 m² (107 sq. ft.), and that accessory buildings under 10 m² typically do not, though they still have to follow the City's location and design rules. If you plan to replace your shed with something bigger, check those rules before you order it.
If your old shed has power running to it, have an electrician disconnect it before the teardown.
DIY or Hire a Crew?
A small, empty metal shed on blocks is a reasonable weekend project if you own a truck. You will still pay disposal fees at the landfill and spend time sorting metal from the rest.
A crew makes more sense when the shed is wood, full, sitting on concrete, rotten, or more than you can safely take down on your own. With shed removal in Calgary from Happy Panda Junk Removal, the crew empties the shed, takes the structure down panel by panel, sorts sound lumber and metal for recycling, and rakes the footprint clean so the space is ready to reuse.
